The cognac distillery was founded by Richard Hennessy, an Irish officer who served in the army of Louis XV. Hennessy cognac was becoming increasingly popular in the United States, a country that had gained its independence only 18 years prior. The Prince of Wales, the future George IV of Britain, was a great connoisseur of cognac. He asked Hennessy to create a "very superior old pale" brandy. Since then, the abbreviation VSOP - Very Superior Old Pale - has become a reference used throughout the industry. Additionally, the creation of the XO (eXtra Old) designation was initiated by Maurice Hennessy. Initially reserved for his family and friends, the XO label has become an international reference for cognacs. The legendary "axe with a point" refers to its founder, Richard Hennessy, who became a French citizen after 12 years of service in the French army.
