Heritage Days in Cognac: Guided Tour of the Martell House and the City's Heritage

View of the city of Cognac during Heritage DaysOn the weekend of September 20th, during the Heritage Days in Cognac, we had the chance to take part in an exceptional tour organized by the Martell House. Renowned for its centuries-old expertise in cognac, Martell offered a journey that goes beyond the cellars: a true immersion in the historical and architectural heritage of Cognac.

Discovering the Heritage of Cognac

Guided through the cobbled streets, we rediscovered Cognac from a new perspective. The white stone façades, the merchants’ mansions, and the half-timbered houses each tell a part of the city’s history. The Charente riverbanks, once the heart of the cognac trade, still testify to Cognac’s prosperity and dynamism through the centuries. Martell skillfully highlighted these treasures, linking the city’s history with the culture of cognac.

When Cognac’s History Meets Martell’s Expertise

Each step of the tour revealed the intimate connection between Cognac and its iconic spirit. Martell presented the city’s history through the lens of cognac: trade exchanges, the role of the river, and the rise of major houses, showing how the city and the spirit have shaped each other over time.

The Martell House: A Benchmark Since 1715

Founded in 1715, the Martell House is the oldest of the great cognac houses still in operation. For over three centuries, it has maintained a tradition of excellence recognized worldwide. Martell embodies the finesse of French cognac and represents an essential part of Cognac’s heritage.

A Sensory Immersion in the Cellars

The tour continued with the discovery of the Martell cellars, where one can appreciate the precision and time required to craft cognac. The woody aroma of the barrels and the dim light of the vast warehouses create a unique atmosphere, reminding visitors that each bottle is the result of meticulous work and ancestral expertise.

Tasting with a View of Cognac

Tasting a Martell cognac cocktail with a view of CognacTo conclude this experience, we were invited to a tasting in the bar overlooking the city, featuring a signature cocktail made with Martell cognac. Glass in hand, facing the city, the moment perfectly blended culture, heritage, and gustatory pleasure.

Martell and Heritage: A Broader Vision

By highlighting not only its cellars but also the city’s collective history, Martell demonstrates that cognac is more than a drink: it is a living culture, rooted in shared heritage. This approach enriches the understanding of Cognac’s heritage and the importance of its major houses, while offering visitors an immersive experience.

At Cognac Only, we love sharing these unique moments that highlight the connection between cognac, the city, and its history. The Heritage Days in Cognac, organized by the Martell House, are a perfect illustration of this richness and passion.
